Professor Sang Yop Kang
Biography
Sang Yop Kang is a Tenured Full Professor of Law at Peking University School of Transnational Law (Peking University STL), where he has been a faculty member since 2011. He attained tenure in 2017. He earned his Doctor of Science of Law (J.S.D.) degree from Columbia Law School under the supervision of Professors Merritt Fox, Jeffrey Gordon, and Curtis Milhaupt in 2011. Prior to studying law, Professor Kang worked as a fund manager. He is a financial and legal expert holding qualifications as an attorney, a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), and a Financial Risk Manager (FRM). Leveraging this extensive practical background, his research and teaching interests encompass corporate law, corporate governance, capital markets, finance, banking, law and economics, corporate groups, ESG, AI and platform regulation, political economy, competition law, institutional investors, state-owned enterprises, Chinese economy, and corporate governance and economic policies in East Asia (covering China, Japan, and Korea). He regularly draws on historical and political insights and analytical frameworks in his research and teaching. Professor Kang further serves as the Co-director of the Forum of Markets and Regulation at Peking University STL. Additionally, he serves as an arbitrator for the Korean Commercial Arbitration Board (KCAB), the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (SCIA), and the Shanghai International Arbitration Center (SHIAC). Beyond his professional endeavors, he possesses a passion for music and art, and acts as a piano composer.
