On the first day, an afternoon panel session will bring together academics and practitioners to discuss topical corporate governance issues.

It will focus on the topic: Fostering Integrity and Innovation: The Power of Corporate Culture. Corporate culture refers to the shared values, beliefs, behaviors, and norms that characterize an organization and shape its employees' attitudes and actions. It encompasses the company's vision, ethics, work environment, leadership style, and communication patterns. Corporate culture and corporate governance are closely intertwined, as both are essential components in determining the effectiveness and integrity of an organization.

ECGI research members have analyzed how these cultural elements impact a firm's performance, decision-making processes, and risk management. Additionally, they explore the role of corporate culture in shaping ethical conduct and fostering innovation within the organization. These insights have become directly relevant. The link between corporate culture and corporate governance is integral to the requirements set out in the ESRS G1 Business Conduct section of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), specifically under Requirement G1-1 on Corporate Culture and Business Conduct. This requirement focuses on how companies establish, develop, and promote a corporate culture and business conduct policies.

The seminar will explore the basic concepts underpinning corporate culture and how companies in Europe are putting these concepts into practice under the new ESRS standard. This will be followed by the ECGI Annual Dinner which is offered to ECGI members and event speakers.

The second day will include the ECGI General Assembly meeting, the 2024 Wallenberg Lecture by Anat R. Admati (Stanford Graduate School of Business), and working paper prizes.

Anat R. Admati

The 2024 Wallenberg Lecture will be delivered by: Professor Anat Admati

Anat R. Admati is the George G.C. Parker Professor of Finance and Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business, a senior fellow at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research and a research member of ECGI.

Lecture Highlights

Exploring Corporate Governance:
Professor Admati will delve into how corporate governance extends beyond the boardroom and internal governance to encompass broader societal governance. She will discuss how the interaction of many parts of the law, as well as corporate culture and social norms, shape the overall impact of corporations.

Legal Interactions: Learn how various laws—ranging from corporate and securities laws to those protecting customers, employees, and the environment—interact and sometimes conflict within the corporate governance framework.

Societal Impact: Understand the societal trade-offs associated with corporate governance, especially when laws are poorly designed or enforced. Discover why a holistic view of governance is essential for market and democratic health.

Policy Implications: Gain insights into the rich agenda for corporate governance research and policy, and its significant implications for businesses and society.
