Shareholders' Role and Responsibilities in Times of Corporate Disruptions (2025)

The 2025 IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference will explore the different perspectives, goals, and strategies of diverse types of shareholders in relation to their investments during periods of significant disruption. Taking place on March 31, 2025, at IESE’s Madrid campus, the conference will feature six sessions led by leading scholars, each presenting the latest research and practical insights on topics such as the impact of various shareholder types on governance effectiveness, board structure, and long-term strategic decisions in an uncertain business context. A panel discussion with distinguished board members will address the evolving role of boards and shareholders in promoting better governance and contributing to firms’ ongoing transformation.

Towards a New Model of Boards of Directors (2024)

The 2024 IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference examined how boards must evolve in response to technological transformation, deglobalization, geopolitical risks, climate change, and shareholder activism. Held on April 15, 2024, at IESE Madrid, the event included five academic sessions with paper presentations and discussants, as well as a session with CEOs and board chairpersons discussing the practical challenges and opportunities facing modern boards.

Corporate Governance, Corporate Culture and the Board’s Culture (2022)

The 2022 IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference addressed the influence of corporate and board culture on governance and company strategy. Held on October 3, 2022, in Barcelona, the conference consisted of five sessions where leading academics presented and discussed research papers, complemented by a session with CEOs and board chairpersons to consider the practical aspects of fostering effective corporate and board cultures.

Boards of Directors and Corporate Strategy in an Uncertain Context (2021)

The 2021 IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference explored the role of boards in shaping corporate strategy amid increasing uncertainty. Held on October 4–5, 2021, the conference adopted a cross-disciplinary approach, featuring five academic sessions in which distinguished scholars presented papers followed by discussants. In addition, two sessions brought together CEOs and chairpersons to examine the practical implications of board involvement in strategic decision-making.

Can Purpose Deliver Better Corporate Governance? (2020)

The 2020 IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference examined whether a clear corporate purpose can enhance governance, particularly in the context of ESG and multi-stakeholder perspectives. Conducted online from October 28–30, 2020, the conference included five sessions with leading scholars presenting papers, each followed by a discussant. Sessions with CEOs and board chairpersons explored the real-world challenges and opportunities of integrating purpose into governance frameworks.

Corporate Governance and Ownership with Diverse Shareholders (2019)

The inaugural IESE-ECGI Corporate Governance Conference focused on how different types of shareholders impact corporate governance and key decisions such as board composition, CEO selection, and strategic direction. Held on October 25–26, 2019, in Barcelona, the event featured five academic sessions where distinguished scholars presented papers followed by discussants, as well as sessions with CEOs and board chairpersons to discuss practical implications for companies with diverse ownership structures.
