Biography

Annalisa Barrett is a Senior Advisor with the KPMG Board Leadership Center, where she informs corporate directors about emerging governance issues and conducts research on board composition and practices. As an expert in corporate governance, she is a frequent speaker on issues important to corporate directors, governance professionals, investors, and other stakeholders. Barrett has been quoted on corporate governance in the New York Times, Bloomberg, and the Financial Times, and her research has been featured on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.

Prior to joining KPMG, Barrett was Founder & CEO of Board Governance Research, where she conducted research on topics including CEO succession planning, microcap board governance and director age diversity, in partnership with the Investor Responsibility Research Center Institute. Her research on gender diversity of California company boards informed deliberations of Senate Bill 826, which was the first state law to require gender diverse boards.

Previously, she was Senior Advisor for ValueEdge Advisors, advising institutional investors on corporate governance matters and as VP & Senior Research Associate at The Corporate Library, where she led the firm’s corporate governance ratings and board effectiveness research.

Barrett was appointed by the CA Insurance Commissioner to serve on the CA Insurance Diversity Task Force. She serves as Chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of the Corporate Directors Forum (CDF), a founding director of CDF Institute, and as a member of the Pacific Southwest Southern CA Advisory Board for National Association of Corporate Directors, the Glass Lewis Research Advisory Council, the California Partners Project Gender Equity Advisory Council, the Southern CA Advisory Council of the Society for Corporate Governance, and she leads the San Diego BioDirector community. She is a member of Women Corporate Directors and San Diego 50/50 Women on Boards Leadership Committee. She is an adjunct professor at the University of San Diego Knauss School of Business, teaching corporate governance.

She is also the chair of the Nominating & Governance Committee of the Kyoto Symposium Organization board, a Fellow of the US-Japan Leadership Program, a Council Leader of the US-Japan Council, and a member of the Japan Board Diversity Network.
