ECGI today announces the appointment of five new Fellows to add to its distinguished ranks. The new Fellows, who were drawn from academia in Europe and the United States, were elected by their peers, the existing Fellows of ECGI. The committee responsible for the process is currently chaired by Professor Julian Franks, Professor of Finance, London Business School.
 
The five new appointees are: Anat Admati, George G.C. Parker Professor of Finance and Economics, Stanford Business School; Jesse Fried, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, Harvard Law School; Dirk Jenter, Professor of Finance, The London School of Economics and Political Science; Michael Klausner, Nancy and Charles Munger Professor of Business and Professor of Law, Stanford Law School and Ernst Maug, Professor of Corporate Finance, University of Mannheim Business School.
 
The Institute awards the title Fellow of ECGI to individuals who have demonstrated scientific excellence or other outstanding achievements in the area of corporate governance and stewardship. Previously appointed Fellows include Nobel Laureates Jean TiroleOliver HartBengt HolmströmDouglas Diamond, and Philippe Aghion. Collectively, the new appointees have published their research in top academic journals worldwide and have consulted for government institutions, businesses, and other respected bodies, while maintaining an impressive range of international credentials and appointments. Their work is widely cited and has inspired new research in corporate governance and stewardship. 
 
Speaking about the new appointments, Professor Julian Franks, said ECGI has a proud tradition of recognising outstanding scholars from around the world for their contributions to corporate governance and stewardship. Election as a Fellow of the Institute represents ECGI’s highest honour, bestowed collectively by the field’s most accomplished academics. This year’s Fellows are long-deserving and reflect the excellence in scholarship that defines ECGI.

About the newly appointed Fellows:

Professor Anat Admati, George G.C. Parker Professor of Finance and Economics, Stanford University

Anat R. Admati is the George G.C. Parker Professor of Finance and Economics at Stanford University Graduate School of Business (GSB), Faculty Director of the GSB Corporations and Society Initiative, and a senior fellow at Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. She has written extensively on information dissemination in financial markets, portfolio management, financial contracting, corporate governance, and banking. Since 2010, Admati has been active in the policy debate on financial regulations. She is the co-author, with Martin Hellwig, of The Bankers’ New Clothes: What’s Wrong with Banking and What to Do about It (Princeton University Press, 2013, updated 2024). Her current research, teaching and advocacy focuses on the complex interactions between political and corporate governance, including law enforcement in the corporate context. Admati is a fellow of the Econometric Society and has served on several editorial boards and and policy committees.

Professor Jesse Fried, William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law, Harvard Law School

Jesse M. Fried is the William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Before joining the Harvard faculty in 2009, he was a Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Berkeley Center for Law, Business and the Economy (BCLBE) at the University of California Berkeley. He holds an A.B. and A.M in Economics from Harvard University, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Fried has also been a visiting professor at Columbia University Law School, Hebrew University, Reichman University, and Tel Aviv University. Fried's main areas of research are executive compensation, corporate governance, corporate bankruptcy and venture capital.

Professor Dirk Jenter, Professor of Finance, The London School of Economics and Political Science

Dirk Jenter is a Professor of Finance at the London School of Economics. He was previously an Associate Professor of Finance at Stanford and an Assistant Professor of Finance at MIT. His main research areas are corporate governance, the selection and compensation of top executives, mergers and acquisitions, and the interactions of firms with capital markets. His work has been published in all top finance journals, has received numerous awards, and has been featured in, among others, the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Economist. He has been an Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance and the Review of Financial Studies. He is LSE’s Academic Director of Executive Education and an accomplished teacher, with teaching awards from MIT, Stanford, and LSE. He graduated with an M.Phil. in Economics from Cambridge and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Business Economics from Harvard.

Professor Michael Klausner, Nancy and Charles Munger Professor of Business and Professor of Law, Stanford Law School

Michael Klausner is the Nancy and Charles Munger Professor of Business and Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and Visiting Professor of Law at NYU. Professor Klausner recently published a book entitled Deals: The Economic Foundations of Business Transactions. He teaches a course with the same title and courses on corporate law and corporate governance. In recent years, in addition to his book, he has written articles exposing the dysfunction of special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs). Before beginning his academic career, Professor Klausner practiced law in Washington, D.C. and Hong Kong. He was a White House Fellow from 1989 to 1990, a law clerk for Judge David Bazelon on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1981-82 and a law clerk for Justice William Brennan on the United States Supreme Court. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.A) and Yale University (J.D. and M.A. in Economics).

Professor Ernst Maug, Professor of Corporate Finance, University of Mannheim Business School

Ernst Maug is Professor of Corporate Finance at the University of Mannheim Business School, a position he has held since 2006. He previously held faculty appointments at the London Business School, the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and Humboldt University in Berlin. He has also held several visiting positions, including at the University of New South Wales and the London School of Economics, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1993.

Professor Maug’s research has appeared in the American Economic Review and all leading finance journals. His work has been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Brattle Prize for the best paper in the Journal of Finance (2024) and the GSAM Award for the best paper in the Review of Finance (2009).

Beyond his research, he has held significant leadership roles within the academic community, serving as President and Program Chair of the European Finance Association and as Associate Dean for Research at the University of Mannheim Business School. He is a regular member of editorial boards and program committees for major international conferences. His research expertise spans theoretical and empirical corporate finance, with an emphasis on corporate governance, shareholder voting, executive compensation, and the role of blockholders. His current research explores the intersection of financial and labor markets.
