Professor Meziane Lasfer
Biography
Having gained a BSc in Accounting and Finance, Meziane Lasfer won a scholarship towards a master’s degree and followed this up with Diploma in Accounting and Finance, MBA and PhD in Finance from the London School of Economics (LSE) and Bath University, UK. He started as a research fellow in November 1990 at City University Business School, and soon promoted to a personal chair. He has directed the Business School PhD and MSc Finance programmes, and he was Associate Dean for Research and Knowledge Transfer, Associate Dean Research for REF Finance Faculty, and member of Dean’s Strategy Committee. He was external examiner at Birmingham Business School, Cranfield School of Management, London Business School, and London School of Economics and Political Sciences. He was previously visiting professor at HEC Paris. EDHEC Business School Nice and Lille, Bologna Business School (Italy), and Africa Business School Casablanca (Morocco).
His research interests include dividend policy, capital structure, taxation, asset sales, corporate governance, managerial ownership, pension fund investments, trading by insiders and institutions, and fundamentals of stock returns. He published in the Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Finance and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Banking and Finance, Financial Management, European Financial Management, and National Tax Journal. His research is widely reported in the financial press and mentioned in the UK Parliament. He is on the editorial board of several journals. He is ranked amongst the top 20 top researchers in Europe*.
He worked with industry, including being an academic advisor at Finsimco, external consultant at the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and doing research with the National Association of Pension Funds (NAPF), the Finance Lease Association (FLA), Morley Asset Management, ICAEW, Donaldsons, Land Securities-Trillium, and Zeal Network SE (Frankfurt). He was expert witness at Bristol crown court.
Professor Lasfer is an award-winning teacher. He has worked with students at all levels - from first year under-graduates to top level executives in large organisations. He teaches Finance courses to MBA students and executives in the UK (e.g., Goldman Sachs, KPMG, Lloyds-TSB, Deloitte, Proton, and Nucleus) and abroad (e.g., Thales, France; PT communicacos, Portugal; Kemira, Finland, and MENA countries (Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, UAE and Saudi Arabia)). His outstanding teaching performance led him to win the First Dean’s Prize for Teaching Excellence in 1998, and in 2003, 2006 and 2008. He was nominated for Economist Intelligence Unit Business Professor of the Year award in 2012.
