Biography

José María Beneyto has extensive experience in international commercial arbitration, having acted as counselor, sole arbitrator, party-appointed arbitrator or Chairman in cases involving major corporations in domestic and international arbitration. He is also called upon to appear as expert witness on arbitration law issues in arbitration proceedings or enforcement actions before domestic courts. He is also active in investment treaty and state entities arbitrations.
Prof. Beneyto is Visiting Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and Professor of International Public and European Law and Jean Monnet Chair at the University San Pablo CEU in Madrid. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal “Arbitraje. Revista de Arbitraje Comercial y de Inversiones”, a leading arbitration journal in Spain and Latin America, which is published three times a year. He is the Managing Director of the Centre for International Arbitration, Mediation and Negotiation (CIAMEN), a leading Spanish academic institution on ADR based in Madrid.
Prof. Beneyto is able to conduct arbitrations in English, German, French and Spanish and has a working knowledge of Italian, Portuguese and Russian.
Over his 30 years of professional legal experience he has previously practiced in the areas of Corporate law, Mergers and Acquisitions, Competition law and European Union law. Throughout his professional career he has counselled more than one hundred larger acquisitions and restructurings of companies in many different sectors (transportation, energy, telecommunications, defence, infrastructure and construction, media, health, distribution, industrial equipment, financial services). Areas of work have included joint ventures, corporate and commercial law and Corporate Governance. He has been a member of the Board of several multinational companies.
In the area of Competition law and EU law, he has represented multinationals and Spanish undertakings in cases before the European Commission, the European Court of Justice, the Spanish Competition authorities and other national antitrust authorities. Among other publications in the fields of European law, he is the editor of a 2-volume treatise on Competition law and of a 12-volume treatise on European law and policies. He has been recognized as a leading lawyer in his areas of expertise by professional publications.

Mr. Beneyto is a member of the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR. He has been a member of several task forces on international arbitration issues established by the ICC and has also participated in the revision of several other institutional arbitration rules. He is the Director of the Joint Programmes between CIAMEN and, respectively, the Chartered Institute of Arbitration, ICSID and WIPO on international arbitration. Mr. Beneyto is on the panel of major international arbitration institutions and has written a number of books and articles on international arbitration.
Professor Beneyto has been an adviser to the European Parliament, the European Commission, the UN and a number of foreign Governments. He was an adviser to the Prime Minister of Spain and, from 2011 to 2016, he was a member of the Spanish Parliament, Spokesman for Foreign Affairs, and Vice Chair of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
